I am the Way, the Truth and the Life - Jesus

From Rev Enosa Auva'a's Desk 8 July 2022

How prepared are you when the unexpected happens?

Several years ago I was on the missionary ship “Logos Hope” in the Caribbean. I was teaching the trainers (who taught health and safety), how to teach adult students and impart their knowledge to all the new recruits from the around the world (South Africa, US, UK and Middle East). Docking at the wharf in Santa Domingo the ship was notified of a coming hurricane/storm requiring us to evacuate the ship and go inland while the ship sailed out to sea until the storm passed. Apparently it was expected to be the worst storm the island had ever experienced and indeed it was. You can imagine how worried, anxious and vulnerable I felt, being so far from home with intermittent communication and in a strange country. A hurricane hitting while heading for a special event was certainly something I wasn’t prepared for. Would I ever see my wife and family again?

It reminds me of the story in Matthew 8 when Jesus and his disciples were sailing in the Sea of Galilee when the storm hit. The disciples were scared for their lives, anticipating the boat was going to capsize in the storm. All along Jesus continued to sleep. In desperation the disciples woke him up and called out “don’t you care that we are going to die”. Jesus stood and told the wind to stop and immediately there was no storm. He went back to enjoy the rest of the journey.

What this story reminds me of is Jesus is in control of all the elements of nature. They obey his commands. He brings peace to conditions beyond our understanding such as commanding the wind and the water to be still. He also bring peace to our hearts when unexpected conditions beset us in life. As the disciples struggled with the fear of losing their lives, Jesus brought peace into the situation and calmed their anxiousness. There is something about this story for us to hold on to. Jesus can bring peace to our extreme conditions and ease our apprehensions. He wants us to call for help like his disciples did in the story.

Whatever you’re facing this week allow Jesus to bring rest to your circumstances. He can calm the storm.

23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Have a great week!

Blessings, Mercy, love, and peace be yours in abundance
