Soul of the City

Welcome, Ni sa bula vinaka kece sara!

This week is Fijian language week so here’s a new greeting for you; it means greetings to everyone.

So “Bula Vinaka” church family!

Last Sunday evening, I attended the Northern Presbytery induction and ordination ceremony of my friend Rev Won Hyuk Joung as the Minister of the Word and sacrament.

Rev Won Hyuk Joung, Rev Fa’amanu Akeripa and I were in the same intake at Knox Theological College training to become Presbyterian Ministers. Won, Fa’amanu and I shared very similar backgrounds as non-New Zealand born students. We shared many trials and challenges as we engaged in further learning as adult learners because English was not our first language. While training, we often shared about our different cultures and their uniqueness that defines who we are in our identities. God in his Wisdom had a plan for us despite these differences.

God’s ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:59): He is infinite--we are finite. He knows the end from the beginning while we see just a short part of the now. He knows the whys, while we grasp for wisdom. Despite our difficulty in understanding God's ways and thoughts He, in His mercy and promise, provides.

God promises us help in difficult times. In times of trials and confusion, He promises wisdom to understand His thoughts and His ways of enabling us to move on. God will allow us to understand and to see the good as we ask in faith believing. God promises peace in our anxiety and hope in our desperation to find fulfilment in life. I encourage you to call on the Lord always, for he will always help you. He is near and He is in total control. Here are some Scriptures for you to meditate on this week.

Isaiah 55:8-9 8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts".

James 1:2-4 2 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, a whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you".
